Coed Hirwaun Muga Open For Play

More than 300 people living in Coed Hirwaun joined the Mayor of Neath Port Talbot and leader of Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council on bank holiday Monday to celebrate the opening of the Coed Hirwaun MUGA.

Costing £210,000, the MUGA is an all-weather floodlit playing court marked out for five a side football, netball, basketball and tennis. Margam Mini’s football team will use it to train in the winter and Coed Hirwaun Primary School will hire it during the day to run sports activities.

The funding was raised by the community with £100,000 given by developer Charles Church for community use at the time of building their properties in 2010. Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council then helped the residents to raise £90,000 from the Welsh Assembly and £20,000 from Sport Wales. The opening event was sponsored by estate agents Payton Jewell Caines.

Kevin Thomas, Chairman of the Coed Hirwaun Community Association said: “It has taken us five years but it is incredible what a community can achieve when it works together. We are very grateful to Payton Jewell Caines for their support throughout the project and especially for their help on the day.”
