Forest School Promotes Self-Esteem and Confidence for Pencoed Pupils

Pencoed Primary School has won the Royal Forestry Society Gold award and secured funding from Payton Jewell Caines for its unique Forest School programme.

Introduced in 2013, the five week Forest School Programme focuses on developing self-esteem and confidence. Children and their parents or family members take part in team building activities including learning how to build campfires and cooking. It is run by Forest School Leader Faye Williams.

Family Engagement Officer Julie Jenkins said: “Extensive research has shown that having parents and family members engaged with school life results in higher academic success and raises children’s self esteem and confidence.”

“Family engagement has become part of school life and we now run the programme on Saturday mornings to allow working families to attend. We are delighted that Payton Jewell Caines has so kindly supported this wonderful initiative which now means that we’ll be able to deliver more sessions for the children of Pencoed.”

Jade Robbins of Payton Jewell Caines added: “We have been really impressed by the positive approach in the school and the work that is done to encourage children to fulfil their potential.”
